HK Piano Teacher is a reliable platform that connects individuals seeking piano lessons to a network of experienced piano teachers in the city.

What we really like about them is that they cater to students of all ages and abilities.

Moreover, they have qualified music teachers who can facilitate graded piano lessons for music examinations from organizations like Trinity College, London (TCL) and the Associated Board of Royal School of Music (ABRSM).

Before you book a request, you can view the full profile of the teachers and watch how they conduct classes. This is a great way to decide who suits your requirements best.

Beyond lessons, HK Piano Teacher also provides assistance in handling disputes, so you don’t have to worry about possible miscommunications in fees and schedules.

From what we’ve heard, they’ve blacklisted private teachers who failed to meet their standards.

Our only issue with them is that there’s no base rate for lessons since they’re only a referral service.

Pros

  • Free referral service
  • Wide network of piano teachers
  • Offers private lessons
  • Offers graded piano lessons
  • Handles disputes between students and teachers
  • Optimal class times (45 to 60 minutes)

Cons

  • Base rates not available

Quick and helpful service

“I have searched for piano teachers for quite some time now and couldn’t find any suitable teacher (price/locations/qualifications) for my daughter. Sam of HK Piano Teacher responded to my enquiry quickly and he gave me many options to choose from. Thank you for your help Sam!”

Piano Artistry Studio is headed by Dionne Hui, a certified pianist who has over 15 years of teaching experience.

You see, while being a collaborative pianist in Munich, she has also worked with children and adults in the Munich Piano School.

In Hong Kong, she also taught piano at the English Schools Foundation and Victoria Belcher International Kindergarten. That’s why we really recommend her for children who are just starting to explore their interests in music.

We like that instead of forcing rigorous drills, Dionne prefers child-friendly methods and music therapy to make learning easy and fun for the kiddos.

With her background, we think she’s also a good fit for diploma-level students who want advanced piano lessons in genres like classical, contemporary, and jazz. She can conduct lessons in Chinese, English, German, and French, so it’s more convenient.

However, since she’s the only piano teacher in the studio, she can only open limited spots per schedule. Make sure to book in advance to secure a spot!

Pros

  • Over 15 years of experience
  • Offers private lessons
  • Offers graded piano lessons
  • Free trial lesson
  • Fun lessons for kids
  • Wide range of foundation and advanced courses

Cons

  • Limited student capacity

Knowledgeable instructors

“Ms. Dionne is very experienced and she’s able to keep my daughter interested in those pieces that she didn’t enjoy at first. She explains well and shares tips on how to practise with my daughter outside of lessons.”

Stephanie Fung’s studio made it on our list because of her strong background in music and experience as a concert pianist.

She has a professional diploma in piano performance and holds a Master’s degree in music studies. She’s also an experienced soloist in various orchestras in Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia.

Another big plus for us is the range of programs she offers. She handles everything from early musical exposure for kids to diploma piano lessons for advanced pupils preparing for auditions at music schools and universities.

Moreover, these programs are age-appropriate and skill-based, which we really appreciate.

We also love how she creates opportunities for students to perform and showcase their skills.

An example of this is Piano Hours, one of the studio’s non-public events. It’s organized so students can participate in various concerts, festivals, and private performances.

Sadly, though, she only provides lessons around Discovery Bay, Mid-Levels, and North Point. If you’re not available in those areas, we suggest you sign up for online piano lessons.

Pros

  • Reputable and experienced teacher
  • Offers private and online piano lessons
  • Offers graded piano lessons
  • Performance opportunities for students
  • Wide range of foundation and advanced courses

Cons

  • Initial consultation isn’t free
  • Limited service area

Founded by Thomas Cheng, a jazz piano teacher and graduate of the London Conservatory of Music, Pro Music Jazz Piano is a leading jazz piano studio with accredited teachers.

What sets them apart from other piano studios is that they use the American, British, and European Suzuki Method in teaching.

These methods are particularly helpful for kids and total beginners because the first lessons focus more on music theory and music listening training. This means if you have no foundation in playing the piano, you can learn to play by ear!

We also love the one-on-one sessions focusing on jazz improvisation, composition, and arrangements that Mr Cheng hosts. We find them very helpful for pupils who wish to learn more beyond the basics of jazz piano.

Another highlight of this studio is its monthly jam session, where students can showcase what they’ve learned so far. Students can also perform with guest professional musicians.

The only drawback is that the lessons are quite expensive. At a rate of HKD 400 per 30-minute lesson, it’s not the most budget-friendly choice on this list.

Pros

  • Team of certified piano teachers
  • Offers online piano lessons
  • Offers private lessons
  • Uses the Suzuki Method in teaching
  • Structured jazz piano lessons

Cons

  • Only offers jazz piano lessons
  • Expensive rates

Supportive and encouraging

“Extreme patience with effective guidance on making noticeable progress, especially on introducing Jazz piano to new learner like me.”

Tommy Wong, Google Reviews

Passionate and committed

“Thomas is enthusiastic and most dedicated jazz piano teacher that I ever met. His course materials are custom made to target his students at different levels. I enjoyed very much learning with him both in the studio and zoom.”

Little Pianest, or the “nest for pianists,” as its founders envision it, is a cozy piano studio catering to students of all ages.

With a strong background in music education, Yat Lai (the founder) created programs that focus on learning core skills like correct technique and music reading rather than imitation and memorization.

We especially liked that they start by teaching pupils music theory. This allows them to try mentally stimulating activities like games and live concerts first before tackling contextual lessons.

Duets are also a norm here, so expect to play and perform regularly since collaborative piano playing is one of their techniques.

We appreciate the preparatory group classes for as young as three years old too. Of course, these aren’t like formal piano lessons, but rather fun exercises to keep the kids involved and interested in playing the piano.

Although their programs are rooted in the foundation of classical piano, teachers also incorporate lessons in pop, jazz, and even film piano music. This helps expose students to various styles and genres.

Pros

  • Focuses on fun music activities
  • Lessons suitable for young learners
  • Well-equipped studio
  • Wide range of piano genres and styles
  • Performance opportunities for students

Cons

  • Walk-ins are not accepted

Creative and welcoming

“An amazing teacher with so much passion and so creative in her teaching! The studio is located in a convenient (2 min from Wong Chuk Hang MTR) and quiet area, with great sunlight and nice views! Playing the piano feels so relaxing here

The studio also has their own private bathroom which is so rare in HK!”

“Can’t recommend a more qualified, friendly and encouraging teacher than Yatlai! My kids have become absolute obsessed with playing their piano since they started at The Little Pianest ☺️”
