Based on rankings alone, we can say that HKU is one of the most prestigious institutions for international students in Hong Kong. Academic excellence is undeniable, considering they are 17th globally in the QS World University Rankings in 2025.

One of the biggest advantages of studying at HKU is its affordability despite its world-class status. After comparing costs, we found that international students only pay a fraction of what they would pay if they studied in the West.

The university also provides numerous merit-based scholarships, including one-time financial support and renewable assistance for tuition and living costs.

HKU also earned our favor with its highly flexible curriculum. For instance, foreign students can mix and match courses from over 100 majors across 55 programs. This can be easily done online as well upon application.

We found their international exposure to be another strength. With 421 exchange parents in 490 study destinations, HKU students can study at top universities like Oxford, MIT, and Yale.

However, it’s important to know that the admission process is highly competitive, with a high influx of applications each year.

Pros

  • 17th globally in QS World University Rankings
  • 71.4% international professors and academic staff
  • Relatively competitive question
  • Extensive merit-based scholarships
  • 421 exchange partners in 49 countries
  • Flexible curriculum
  • Strong internship opportunities in HK and abroad
  • Streamlined application process

Cons

  • Highly competitive admission process
  • Large student population

World-class university

As a world-class famous university, it deserves its reputation. The software and hardware are first-class, the environment is also very beautiful, the food in the cafeteria is delicious and affordable, and it is not inferior to the time-honored gourmet shops on the streets of Hong Kong. It is well worth visiting and studying!

Convenient place to study

Such a beautiful and convenient place to study. HKU has its own MTR Station which is connected to the campus, thus, making it very simple to reach the campus area. The mixture between older & modern buildings with the nature surroundings was very pretty & unique. The students and officers were very nice in answering questions when I wanted to reach some faculties. Sadly, most canteens aren’t available for tourists (at least until Dec 2023).

PolyU’s global reputation really impressed us. It’s the 57th institution in the world, according to QS World Rankings in 2025.

It’s also a leader in various fields, ranking 11th in Hospitality & Leisure Management and 14th in Architecture & Built Environment, among others.

One of the big things that stood out to us is their comprehensive international student support, made possible by their Non-Local Student Services Team (NLSST).

This department—made specifically for foreign students—provides personalized support, integration programs, and culture exchange activities.

We were also impressed by PolyU’s facilities. They have modern sports, cultural, and recreational facilities. They also have 14 on-campus dining options catering to diverse dietary and cultural eating needs.

That said, some of its most competitive programs, such as Architecture and Nursing, have limited spots for international students. Admission is highly selective, so it’s best to apply early with a strong academic record.

Pros

  • Offers many top-ranking programs
  • Offers merit-based scholarships with no separate application
  • Financial aid for exchange programs
  • NLSST depart for internationals students support
  • Multiple facilities and amenities
  • Offers summer programs and short-term study tours

Cons

  • Competitive admissions for high-demand programs

Offers many courses

It’s a great University. They offer a lot of courses in different disciplines. The School of Design and School for Hotel and Tourism Management are highly ranked. Also different engineering courses offered at the University are highly ranked internationally. The over QS world ranking of the University is 66 for the year 2021-22.

With over 20,000 students from over 80 countries, we see CityU as a compelling choice for international students. Further proving this is their number 1 ranking in Times Higher Education for 2024 and 2025.

We like that CityU prioritizes global opportunities. They have over 400 exchange partners across over 40 countries, something only top universities can offer.

We also love that the primary medium of instruction is English, making it easier for international students to understand their lessons. In fact, 70% of the faculty are recruited from overseas to ensure inclusivity.

We also found them to be a great choice for students with exceptional athletic abilities. This is because they offer a Student Athletes Admission Scheme (SAAS), which grants athletic scholarships of up to $200,000 (HKD) per year.

They’re also remarkable in terms of enhancing employability. We were really impressed when we found out that over 65% of their students gain overseas internship experience. We think this is important in helping students build global connections and industry knowledge.

Compared to most local universities, though, their tuition and fees are relatively more expensive. We recommend looking into financial aid if you plan on applying.

  • #1 Most International University by THE 2024 and 2025
  • Over 20,000 students from 80+ countries
  • 400+ exchange partners in 40+ countries

Ranking 6th in Asia and 36th globally in the QS World University Rankings for 2025, CUHK is a solid option for international students looking for global skills.

We find them to be particularly great for students seeking interdisciplinary education. This is because they offer Faculty Packages, which allow students to take up to 9 credit units outside their major.

Additionally, there’s an option to take one or two minors or a double major.

Among other universities, CUHK also has a strong global reputation. In fact, they have attracted students from over 50 countries, including the US, Canada, and various parts of Asia.

We also liked that they offer on-campus accommodation at competitive rates. Students pay an average of $16,000 (HKD) per year to enjoy these amenities.

On the rough side, tuition is not the cheapest for international students, starting at about $178,000 per year. There also aren’t a lot of scholarship options for foreign learners, which can make things more challenging.

Pros

  • Flexible credit unit system
  • Offers capstone courses
  • Double major or minor options available
  • Students from more than 50 countries
  • Solid on-campus accommodation available
  • Offers faculty packages for extra credit

Cons

  • High annual tuition
  • Limited scholarship options

Great quality of teaching

It’s a great University in Hong Kong. The ranking is good, the teaching quality is good. An abundant supply of materials and support to students. Facilities are good enough for students, sports grounds, libraries, swimming pool, accommodation, café, and canteen, etc. Buildings are all along the mountain. The environment is pleasant and enjoyable. Good to take a look, it would be a nice visit even if you’re not a student here.

World-class campus

The university is world class and the campus feels like a nature trail. Filled with trees and greenery, it has the best campus in Hong Kong, or maybe in the world as well. Transport facilities are also very good. Students can travel in uni buses for free and the buses are very punctual. The staff is also very humble and friendly.

For international students who want to enter business, we find HKUST to be a great choice. This is because they boast a solid entrepreneurial approach to education that delivers real results.

For example, they currently have 1,800 active start-ups established by students, faculty, and alumni. It has also produced 10 unicorn start-ups (meaning companies with values over $1 billion).

In terms of teaching, we are impressed by the credentials of their educators. 27% of HKUST faculty are among the world’s top 2% of scientists.

Their research is also a strong suit, ranking number 1 in China and number 33 globally in the Patent Influence Metric. It also boasts 52 research centers, providing students with ample hands-on research opportunities.

Applying as an international student is streamlined, as it can be done online. However, there are a few issues regarding poor instructor attitude, which can turn off a few students. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like a major issue as of late.

Pros

  • Specializes in entrepreneurial programs
  • World-class faculty
  • High patent influence
  • Over 17,000 diverse students
  • Offers visa assistance
  • Number 24 in global employability

Cons

  • A few reports of poor attitude from instructors

Beautiful and excellent

One of the best universities I have ever visited. The campus is very beautiful and has excellent facilities. It’s also among the high ranked universities in Asia.

State-of-the-art technologies

This is a very good university. The courses teach state-of-the-art technologies, the research environment is good, and the facilities are top notch. The campus is very beautiful, and is open to the public as of August 2023. The university can be accessed via public transport or taxis. There are no MTR stations nearby, but a number of bus routes serve the campus. The university has a number of locations for photographing the sea, architecture, and small animals that live on the campus.
